Is it possible for a self-published book to be picked up by a brick & mortar publisher?

Is self-publishing a disadvantage when it comes to soliciting a publishing house?

I have heard of many authors being offered publishing deals after self publishing. Apparently the author of a book titled 'On the Island' was recently offered a substantial deal by a major publishing house after it went viral online...cheers

It has happened a few times - but if you research the ones which have received offers, you'll see that those authors sold a few thousand copies of their book before being picked up by a major publishing house.

If you consider that in the self-publishing world, the definition of a "best seller" is anything that sells over 100 copies - then selling a couple of thousand is a huge ask.  You will need a lot of determination and either a good knowledge of marketing or the assistance of someone who knows the ropes.   And a great book, of course.

That's a great answer Marissa and well thought out. I think it is a lot of hard work & determination to self publish and promote your own work. The author I mentioned out it up online after many rejections & was lucky enough to sell over 300

    The short answer - yes.
EL James - 50 Shade of Grey and Amanda Hocking are the most known right now.

I think it's possible. I think even a big traditional publisher may pick up your book if it was self-published, especially if it's sold well.
